Helium Explained in Simple Terms for Beginners

Published 30 August 2026 · CryptoStart

Helium is a decentralized wireless network designed to provide low-power, long-range connectivity for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Often called "The People's Network," it allows individuals to deploy hardware hotspots that create coverage and earn HNT tokens for doing so.

How Helium Works

Helium uses a unique mechanism called Proof-of-Coverage. This verifies that hotspots are providing real wireless coverage by challenging each other. Hotspot owners are rewarded with HNT for their participation in validating the network and transferring device data.

The Hardware: Helium Hotspots

To join the network, participants purchase and install a Helium Hotspot. This small device connects to the owner's home internet and broadcasts a wireless signal that IoT devices, like pet trackers or soil sensors, can use to send data over long distances.

The HNT Token and Data Credits

The network has two tokens. HNT is mined by hotspot operators for providing coverage. Data Credits (DC) are used by developers and companies to send data through the network, and they are purchased using HNT, which is then burned to create DCs.

FAQ

How is Helium different from traditional cell networks?

Unlike centralized providers, Helium is built and owned by individuals. People deploy hotspots in their homes or offices, creating a global, user-owned wireless network with a different economic model.

How can someone get involved with Helium?

Getting started typically involves researching compatible hotspots for your region, purchasing one from an authorized vendor, and setting it up with a power source and internet connection to begin earning HNT.
